Postcard Key to Steeple’s Past and Future

ABOVE: The Post Chapel at Orlando Air Base, located in tropical garden environs is unique in that it is the only chapel in the entire army that has its steeple on the ground and to the side of the chapel. The chapel is so near the end of an airdrome runway that Army planes zoom low over this building as they approach and take off from the flying field, necessitating the strange location of the chapel steeple. Photo by Public Relations Section, Orlando Air Base.

Postcard showing steeple and cupola on side of Army Air Base Chapel serves as historical standard for Stephen L. Rusk Memorial Chapel steeple and cupola to be placed in Thornton Park Historic District.

The architectural design used by the military, placing the steeple on the side to allow for planes flying low, is used by John Moore for his residential design: Attaching the historic cupola and steeple to the side of his house in agreement with City of Orlando Zoning.

My wife and I got married in this Beautiful Chapel on May 1, 1975. We have several photos within the chapel but we never took a photo outside on that beautiful evening.
