Preserving the Flora of Florida for Future Generations

When Hurricane Charley went through here and devastated part of our yard we spent two years hauling out 9 of the giant oak trees that had fallen. Then the people came and told us we had canker on our citrus and 12 of those went. We replanted and redid and five years later you hardly notice that there’s any difference in the property. I think that’s what’s important about living in Florida. You want it to be an improvement year after year. You want to introduce different kinds of plants different kinds of trees so that what you have is preserved for the next generation.

Orlando resident Anna Mae Patz recalls her first impressions of coming to Central Florida from the north when her husband came down in the 1960s to work at the Cape. In this excerpt from an oral history interview on October 31, 2011, she describes what she loves about living in Orlando, the lake they live on, the trees and temperature that are wonderful all the time and the importance of preserving the beauty for future generations.
